Why XXL

Why dedicated XXL aids?

Standard aids are usually designed for 130–150 kg – enough for most users, but not for bariatric care. Three factors distinguish a genuine XXL aid from a standard product:

Load capacity

Reinforced frames, thicker tube walls and additional struts – designed and tested for loads up to 300 kg.

Width

Wider seats, more space inside, often width-adjustable – so the user truly has room.

Stability

Wider footprint and a lower centre of gravity – stable even under one-sided load when sitting down.

Advice for consultation: Always plan with a safety margin. The user’s actual weight should stay well below the stated maximum load.

Areas of use

Where XXL aids are used

Bariatric wards

Purchasing

What buyers should look for when selecting

1Load capacity with reserveThe user’s weight should stay well below the maximum load – around 170 kg for 200 kg models, with correspondingly more headroom for 300 kg models.
2Choose the right seat widthIs a standard-width seat enough, or is width adjustment needed? The COMFORT models offer the widest range at 55–85 cm.
3Available spaceXXL models are larger than standard products – check the manoeuvring space in the bathroom or care room in good time.
4Certified medical devicesAll XXL models are medical devices under CE MDR Class 1 – the stated maximum load is part of the documented product specification.
5The user’s dignityAn aid that truly fits gives back independence – a standard product that is too small does not.
6Hygiene & cleaningPowder-coated steel frames and smooth plastic seats can be wipe-disinfected – a requirement for hospitals and care homes.

Quality for professional use

Built for reuse

All XXL aids are CE MDR Class 1 and 100 % made in Europe. Reinforced, powder-coated steel constructions with increased wall thickness are designed for long-term bariatric use. Every product comes with a 5-year warranty; seats, cushions, buckets and wheels are available via our spare parts & accessories.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

From what body weight are XXL aids needed?

As a guide: once the user’s weight exceeds 130–150 kg, standard aids are no longer sufficient. What matters is the maximum load stated on the product – it must not be pushed to the limit.

What does bariatric mean?

Bariatric is the technical term for the care of patients with obesity, i.e. people with significantly increased body weight. Bariatric aids are specially designed and tested for this.

Are the XXL models suitable for professional care?

Yes. They are designed for daily use in hospitals, care homes and home care – with wipe-disinfectable surfaces, individually available spare parts and a 5-year warranty.

What is the difference between 200 and 300 kg?

The 200 kg models cover the most common bariatric needs. The 300 kg versions (BERTA, COMFORT 1-1296 and 1-1297) use reinforced frames with greater wall thickness.

When does width adjustment matter?

When not only the weight but also the body circumference is above average. The COMFORT models adapt to the anatomy with a seat width of 55–85 cm.

Do I also need an XXL walker?

For higher body weight, yes. The ALBE EL XXL has a reinforced frame rated up to 250 kg, wider forearm supports (46–62 cm) and electric height adjustment.
