Walker or rollator – what is the difference?

Both aids support walking but solve different problems. What matters is how much body weight the aid takes on:

Rollator

The user holds on to handles with their hands – for more mobile people who need balance and some support.

Walker with forearm supports

The forearms rest on padded supports. The aid takes on a large part of the body weight – for walking exercises, rehab, early mobilisation and users with greater limitations.

Rule of thumb: If holding on to a rollator is no longer enough and the user needs support through the arms when standing, a walker with forearm supports is the right choice.

Height adjustment

Manual, gas spring or electric – the right height adjustment

The type of height adjustment determines the right use. NORDIC offers all three versions – each also as an HR version with dual-function hand brake:

1Manual height adjustmentIdeal when the walker is assigned to one user and the height is rarely changed. Robust, low-maintenance, economical. Models: ALBE STANDARD, STANDARD HR and RA.

2Gas spring (GAS)Stepless, tool-free adjustment – ideal for frequently changing users in gait schools, care or hospitals. Models: ALBE GAS, GAS HR and GAS-RA.

3Electric height adjustment (EL)At the push of a button – makes standing up and transfers easier on the spot. First choice when staff need relief and the user is to be actively raised. Models: ALBE-EL, EL HR and EL XXL.

All models are powder-coated, CE MDR Class 1 and fitted with padded, wipeable forearm supports. The abbreviation HR stands for the dual-function hand brake (running and parking brake directly on the handle). The choice depends on the type of adjustment, wheel diameter and user weight.

How does a walker differ from a rollator?

What does the abbreviation “HR” stand for?

For the dual-function hand brake: two castors can be braked gradually (running brake) and locked (parking brake) via a lever on the handle – without bending down. The HR version is available manual (1-2245-HR), with gas spring (1-2246-HR) and electric (1-2247-HR).

Which height adjustment is right?

Manual for a fixed user, gas spring for frequent changes, electric when standing up and transfers are to be actively supported.

Are there walkers for heavy users?

Yes. The ALBE EL XXL has a reinforced frame rated up to 250 kg and electric height adjustment. You can find further bariatric solutions under XXL aids.

Are the walkers suitable for outdoor use?

The RA models with large 200 mm wheels (ALBE-RA and ALBE GAS-RA) are designed for combined indoor and outdoor use.

Which walker is suitable for tight spaces?

With a frame width of around 76 cm, the ALBE models are compact and fit through standard doors; RA models are slightly wider. For very tight layouts, please get in touch.

Are the walkers suitable for professional care?
